VOIP provider Storm said in Parliament today that it does not advocate the self-provisioning of Value-added Network Services (VANS).
The comment was made by Storm new business development director Dave Gale, on the first day of hearings on the Convergence Bill before the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications.
"Surprisingly enough, although we are a VANS licence holder, we don't advocate the self-provisioning of VANS because such self-provisioning would imply onerous licensing conditions such as geographical boundaries and social service delivery," Gale said.
If VANS were allowed to self-provision it would impact on the business cases of Telkom and the second national operator, he added. He said competition should be increased at the service provider level
The Convergence Bill hearings are scheduled to end towards the end of September.
