Storage revenue booms

Worldwide external controller-based (ECB) disk storage revenue has risen by 11.3%, to reach $18 billion from 2007's figure of $16.2 billion, says international research firm, Gartner.

“The double-digit full year growth rate of 11.3% is all the more impressive given the current economic downturn, and demonstrates the resilience of the storage industry,” says Donna Taylor, principal research analyst for Gartner's global Storage Quarterly Statistics programme.

EMC maintained its number one position, with 25% revenue market share, according to a Gartner statement. IBM came in second, with 13.6%, and HP was third, with 11.6%.

Hitachi Data Systems was placed fourth, with 9.2%, followed by Dell, with 8.8%. NetApp and Sun Microsystems placed sixth and seventh, respectively, with 7.8% and 5.2% market share. Dell showed the strongest year-on-year growth at 15.5%.

In the fourth quarter of 2008, worldwide ECB revenue showed growth of 5.4%. Fifth-place Dell experienced the greatest year-over-year fourth quarter revenue growth of 11.3%.
