Storage industry promotes SSDs

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced the Solid State Storage Initiative (SSSI) with NetApp as a founding member, reports Arnnet.

As a collective initiative committed to becoming the recognised authority for storage made from non-volatile, solid state memory devices, the SSSI will coordinate and conduct education efforts for the vendor and user, highlight the virtues of solid state storage, and further the development of standards.

In addition, the SSSI will collaborate with other organisations and initiatives to further the dialogue on solid state storage as well as leverage the SNIA international organisation to promote solid-state storage globally.

Ocarina upgrades ECOsystem

Ocarina Networks has upgraded its data de-duplication appliance to further reduce wasted disk space, and is now targeting the product at a wider number of industries, states Networkworld.

Ocarina launched its ECOsystem appliance in April, initially targeting photo-sharing Web sites such as Kodak EasyShare, one of its customers.

The company is now supporting new file types for specific industries, making the appliance useful for social networks, movie studios, oil and gas companies and medical organisations.

Agami re-opens as Scalable

Agami, a data storage firm abruptly shut down in July, has been reborn as Scalable Storage Systems, reports SiliconValley.

The closure came less than six months after it trumpeted $45 million in venture capital to ramp up its challenge to data storage giants EMC and NetApp.

Agami's demise and its reincarnation as Scalable have angered former employees, who say they were misled about Agami's prospects and never told when, or if, they'll receive commissions and money owed for back pay.
