StarNet Communications, a publisher of Windows-to-Linux connectivity software, has announced a major upgrade of its X-Win32 PC X server. X-Win32 Version 5.0 for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT/2000 computers offers a redesigned user interface and a range of new features, including thin client access to Linux/Unix servers and the ability to connect to multiple Unix and Linux host systems simultaneously.
Among the key new capabilities incorporated in X-Win32 version 5.0 is the Multiple XDMCP Sessions feature, which allows users to connect to multiple Unix and Linux host systems simultaneously and run applications from those machines on their Windows desktop.
X-Win32 Version 5.0 also includes a "Session Wizard" that helps the growing number of Linux and Unix novices set up and run sessions on a host computer. "X-Win32 Version 5.0 addresses the growing need among customers to implement enterprise-wide Linux and Unix solutions by making it easier for Windows users to log onto servers and bring X applications, such as a database application, to their Windows desktop," says Steven Schoch, co-founder and CEO of StarNet.
Version 5.0 broadens the reach of the PC X server to Windows-based terminals, including diskless thin clients, through new Windows Terminal server support. Until now, access to Linux/Unix hosts from a thin client Windows terminal was only possible through a Web browser. That approach, however, consumes a significant portion of the display area. Now Windows terminals can import full-screen KDE or Gnome desktops and run multiple X applications from powerful Unix and Linux servers.
Also, Windows Terminal Server Support will allow administrators to install X-Win32 on a server instead of local PC hard drives. Windows Terminal Server Support allows Windows terminals, even diskless thin client machines, to connect directly to Linux and Unix hosts over a TCP/IP network.
