Back in 2001, consol gamers across the globe were hit by a blizzard. The first instalment of the snowboarding title SSX was released and it was quite an eye-opener with its stylish visuals, addictive gameplay and a brilliant, responsive control system.

It was arguably the first of its kind. Although the ride became a bit bumpy for the EA development team with the second release (SSX: Tricky), which was entirely unrealistic as far as the laws of gravity are concerned, the third instalment (SSX3) brought them back into action and painted a perfect picture of just how bright the future of SSX could be.

This year it`s time to return to the top of the mountain in EA`s latest in the series: "SSX: On Tour".

First things first: A whole new look has been presented. Starting off with a scrapbook animation sequence as an intro to the game, along with a killer soundtrack - this title has had a major facelift. Speaking of which, the choice of characters in the game has been extended, along with a great new feature in the tour mode, where gamers can create their own characters.

Even though we know SSX as a snowboarding game, this time around EA decided it was time to offer the fans an alternative - skis! For me the choice is obvious but someone out there might want to try a different way of getting across the finish line. The control system is not effected by the change of gear; it remains the same for both snowboards and skis.

Reaching breakneck speeds and catching huge air are all part of becoming an SSX icon. A created rider or skier can build a career and progress from a slope-side wannabe to a black-diamond dominating rock star. Compete for medals or just tear up the massive new mountain. Pull off jaw-dropping monster tricks to out-style the competitors while hurtling down the slopes at supersonic speeds.

There is no particular story line to the game. At first it`s about simply racing random characters one-on-one down the slopes, earning self-respect and eventually getting on to the tour. Pulling off multiple combos and some high score tricks gets competitors up the ladder pretty quickly. Unlike SSX3, all the slopes are available as soon as the game starts, which means next level features do not need to be unlocked. This kills off a bit of that winning satisfaction.

The overall presentation in SSX: On Tour is excellent. Everything from doodled menus to the awesome visuals and soundtrack is great. Even details like the screen blurring up when hitting those high boost speeds and character shadows showing on the scenery have been covered. An occasional snowstorm, a little night boarding - what more can I say? You`ve got to love it. Some fortunate Game-Cube owners can even experience some downhill action with the all time favourite Super Mario.
