Power failures won't keep South Africa's oldest Afrikaans daily newspaper, the Bloemfontein-based Volksblad, from reaching its readership spread far across the Free State and Northern Cape, from Hannover and Kakamas to Sasolburg and Harrismith.
Volksblad, a member of the Media 24 Group, was founded in 1904. The newspaper recently approached Square One Power Solutions, the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) specialist in the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group, for a solution that would ensure power redundancy for two new editorial system servers installed at a cost of R1 million.
Square One Power's Bloemfontein branch supplied and installed two of its QP 5000 units, each rated at 10kVA and with 45 minutes of battery backup, to ensure that Volksblad's editorial department keeps churning out the news.
In the event of a mains power failure, the UPS units maintain power supply to the Volksblad servers from their batteries. The editorial system therefore remains online until power from a diesel driven standby generator set takes up the load. The generator power is fed to the servers through the UPS units to ensure it is clean and spike or sag-free to maintain the integrity of the data.
"The 10kVA rating of both UPS units gives Volksblad some spare capacity," says Square One Power Solutions Bloemfontein branch manager Rudolf Holzhausen. "They not only provide sufficient power to keep the servers going, but the newspaper is also able to keep other electrical equipment, considered critical to the editorial department, functioning during a mains power failure."
