Solution merges RFID and barcodes

Ekahau, developer of WiFi-based real-time location systems (RTLS), has partnered with Salo, Finland-based Nordic ID to roll out a solution that combines passive RFID with barcode labels, says HealthcareITNews.

The solution is designed to track low-cost assets such as surgical instruments, drug supplies and other inventory.

The scanner's location is determined via RTLS and then associated with RFID/barcode information on the asset being scanned.

The location and asset information can then be viewed and managed with the Ekahau Vision business logic and analytics software, reports Science 2.0.

The software lets users see asset locations on a real-time map, generate asset reports and audit trails, and alert users if any items are low or in the wrong location.

The new solution is comprised of Ekahau RTLS software and Nordic ID handheld RFID and barcode scanners.
