SITA awards OSS tender

Johannesburg, 15 Feb 2006

An open source software (OSS) tender, believed to be the largest of its kind, was awarded yesterday at a scheduled meeting of the Supplier Selection Authority (SSA) of the State IT Agency.

Project manager Wynand Swart says the office suite tender, known as 'OSS Solutions for Workstations', was awarded to more than one company.

"A few companies" were successful, with each one concentrating on different distributions, he reveals.

"We're satisfied with the outcomes," he says, adding that usually the SSA does not reach consensus at the first meeting.

Further details regarding the tender were not forthcoming, but Swart predicts the identities of the successful players and the value of the tender will be known within a matter of days.

Competing vendors for the tender have been awaiting news since tender submissions closed in October 2005, with delays in technical evaluations setting back the announcement date.
