Video-on-demand (VOD) subscription service ShowMax now has a download feature that allows Apple users to save TV shows and movies for offline viewing.
ShowMax hopes to address SA's slow local Internet connectivity with the feature, which is already available to Android users.
The VOD service claims to have the largest content catalogue in Africa, which can be accessed via an Internet connection and a suitable device.
"The Internet connection is the challenge for many South Africans," says ShowMax GM John Kotsaftis.
"Not everyone has fast Internet access throughout the day, or can afford to stream using a mobile connection. The beauty of this new download feature is that as long as you're connected at some point, perhaps using a public WiFi hotspot, at work, or a night-time mobile data bundle, then you can still use ShowMax to get shows and movies," adds Kotsaftis.
Up to 25 TV shows and movies can be stored at any point using the app on Android tablets and smartphones, depending on the available storage capacity on the device.
The content will be visible for 30 days and once viewing of a particular show or movie has started, it will be available for completion over the next 48 hours and then disappear. The same content can be downloaded again if needed.
At the end of last year, ShowMax teamed up with kykNET to expand its footprint globally. The VOD service is now available in the UK, US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
iOS users will need to update the ShowMax app to make use of the new feature.
