Shell, Telia AB take Linux into big iron

The world`s largest Linux supercomputer, comprising of 1 024 IBM X-Series servers, is to be built for Shell International Exploration & Production BV to run seismic and other geophysical applications.

As a key part of its exploration initiatives, data collected in Shell exploration surveys will be fed into the supercomputer, which will facilitate massive analytical and calculation capabilities in researching the data.

"The fact that Shell has decided to run these applications on an IBM Linux supercomputer demonstrates that Linux is coming of age," says Irving Wladawsky Berger, IBM VP of technology and strategy. "It shows that Linux can scale to meet the high-workload demands of even the most progressive supercomputing tasks."

The announcement made yesterday follows IBM`s win last week of a $3 million contract to install a mainframe computer running Linux for Telia AB, Scandinavia`s largest telecommunications and Internet service provider.

Telia will be the first European Linux customer for IBM eServer Z-Series, formerly known as S/390. Telia will install a combination of IBM mainframe running on Linux and Shark storage systems, to host and run its Internet services business. In addition, Telia will offer virtual private network services to customers in Europe, starting with the Nordic countries.

Telia will replace its 70 existing Web hosting servers with a single IBM eServer Z-Series, capable of hosting more than 1 500 Internet server partitions, for Telia hosted business customers, simultaneously. To meet the storage capacity demands, Telia will use an 11.4TB IBM Enterprise Storage Server ("Shark").
