State signal distributor Sentech on Wednesday launched an e-learning pilot project at Dipalo School of Information Communication Technology, in Pimville, Soweto.

This e-learning solution is a collaborative effort which offers access to online educational tools readily available anytime, anywhere through the Sentech telecommunications network.

The project also provides an opportunity for jobs to be created in support of the e-learning platform and for the development of a local e-learning expertise base.

Eric Kholwane, chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications, applauds Sentech and involved parties in this initiative, which “will see the lives of students fundamentally improved”.

“This innovative and interactive system will ensure world-class education in SA; especially in our rural and underserviced schools. The system does, however, set in motion the need for both educators and parents to be computer literate for the optimum utilisation of the software,” says Kholwane.

Support system

The objective of the e-learning system is to improve quality of education, while making the learning experience “fun”.

“This system also provides a supporting eco-system for both teachers and parents to participate in observing and assisting the progress of the learner,” says Sentech.

It adds that this system will bring a connected world into the classroom for interaction and communication.

The e-learning project will be piloted in eight Sentech CSI schools. Phase two of the project will include a further 120 public schools, while also targeting other interested schools.
