Slow Internet connectivity yesterday was caused by terrestrial issues - and not cuts or damage to Seacom's undersea cable system as reported.

Seacom says yesterday's outage, which lasted just a few hours, was caused by terrestrial backhaul issues on the links from Mtunzini (north of KwaZulu-Natal) to Johannesburg and "only affected some circuits".

The cable company says it is still investigating the reasons for the simultaneous outages on its backhaul partner networks.

MWeb CEO Derek Hershaw says the nature of the fault, being terrestrial, was relatively minor - compared to undersea breakages - and therefore quicker to identify and fix.

The Internet service provider notified its clients at about 2pm yesterday that both its 10GB links to the Seacom cable were down, and that some customers may experience reduced services. Hershaw confirmed the fault lay with the backhaul network in SA.

While services were gradually restored from about 4pm, Seacom was able to confirm its services were back up and stable at about 8pm last night.
