SCO announces new Linux Professional Services offerings

By A-Plus Communications
Johannesburg, 27 Aug 1999

The Professional Services division of SCO recently announced a new series of Linux related offerings to help enterprise customers evaluate and manage the cost, benefits and risk of Open Source technologies. These new services are part of SCO`s ongoing strategy to fully support the increasingly popular network computing model, which favors heterogeneous client devices and application environments from multiple vendors.

"Enterprise networks today are a mix of different systems and technologies from different vendors," said David Taylor, vice president of Professional Services at SCO. "Enterprise customers want to choose the best technology for the task, but they also want to minimize the risk of introducing new technologies to their current business-critical environments. That`s why they`ve asked SCO to help. We have over twenty years of experience with UNIX, Intel, and Open Source technologies. In fact, we believe that SCO has the largest staff of Open Source experts of any commercial software vendor."

As a founding sponsor of Linux International, SCO is a strong proponent of the Open Source movement, citing it as a driving force for innovation. Over the years, SCO has contributed source code to the movement, and currently offers a free Open License Software Supplement CD that includes many Open Source technologies. SCO UnixWare 7 operating system, the fastest growing UNIX server operating system for the past two years, supports Linux applications as part of its development platform.

In expanding its Professional Services offerings to include support for evaluation and deployment of Open Source technologies, such as Linux systems, in existing enterprise networks, SCO is offering the following services:

.         Linux Audits to help customers plan and cost their deployment

.         Open Source deployment implementation

.         Configuration Management and Maintenance

.         Telephone Consulting and Technical Support

.         Custom Engineering

SCO - the Number 1 Provider of UNIX Systems for Intel Based Computers "The labor-based technology model of Open Source products creates a significant need for services and people to assist any company electing to deploy Linux systems," said Taylor. "The open source nature of Linux, its UNIX heritage, and a significant pool of in-house technical staff who are skilled in Linux systems give SCO Professional Services a unique capability for helping these enterprise customers. As the world`s leading provider of UNIX server operating systems for Intel based computers, as well as SCO Web-enabling Tarantella software, SCO has unique experience in supporting network computing environments based on a mix of heterogeneous systems. We can provide outstanding assistance in Open Source applications and infrastructure alongside the world`s leading `UNIX on Intel` server platform, UnixWare 7."
