Oracle University South Africa last week hosted Africa's first Oracle University Expert Summit in Sandton.
The summit brought four Oracle experts from around the world to Johannesburg to share their insights and best practices regarding the Oracle database. Previous summits were held in London, Dubai and Istanbul.
An important point of the summit was to bring world-class experts to SA, as SA IT workers cannot always afford to travel to other countries to gain insight from these executives, said Pragasen Moodley, sales director for Oracle University Africa.
The summit was aimed at a broad range of IT workers, from interns to highly skilled executives, added Moodley.
Oracle experts included independent specialist Jonathan Lewis, who gave seminars on database troubleshooting and tuning and writing optimal SQL: the Standardised Query Language used to request information from a database, and independent consultant, researcher, lecturer and author Chris Date, who gave seminars on database relational theory.
Technical architect and Oracle technologist Arup Nanda gave seminars on automatic storage management (ASM) and real application clusters (RAC) in Oracle databases, and training specialist and Oracle ACE director Dan Hotka presented on understanding explain plans, working with indexes, and advanced techniques and tuning in PL/SQL, Oracle's extension for SQL.
The summit also offered certification and training consultations, technology demos and roundtable discussions.
Oracle University SA offers training and certification in Oracle's Red Stack products and technologies, via classroom, online or hybrid (classroom and online) learning, to individuals or via private or public events.
