RIM lines up new BlackBerry models

Faced with a stock price that has plummeted more than 50%, Research In Motion (RIM) has revealed it will release seven new BlackBerry smartphones in the months ahead, according to Digital Trends.

Speaking at the company's annual shareholders' meeting this week, co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said the phones would all run RIM's new operating system, but was also frank about the difficulties of pulling off what he said was the company's biggest launch to date.

The new smartphones have been a long time coming, but Mike Lazaridis, Balsillie's fellow co-CEO, said the delay was in part due to the technology of the newest BlackBerry Bold jumping a generation.

Over 1m sites closed in China

More than one million Web sites closed down in China last year, a state-run think tank has said, reveals the BBC.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said there were 41% fewer Web sites at the end of 2010 than a year earlier.

Chinese officials have tightened regulations on the Internet in recent years, and they unleashed a crackdown on pornography Web sites in 2009.

Zuckerberg drops off Google+ charts

Mark Zuckerberg, billionaire founder of Facebook, has gone from hero to zero - on Google+ anyway, reports Fox News.

Zuckerberg made headlines last week when his profile soared to the top of the popularity charts on the rival Google+ social network. As of 5 July, he had 10 000 more followers than Google founder Larry Page, and nearly twice as many as co-founder Sergey Brin.

But late Tuesday night, the social network king mysteriously dropped off the charts at SocialStatistics.com entirely - as did several key Google executives.

Samsung creates new organisation

Samsung has created an organisation that will oversee the company's memory chip, system LSI and LCD businesses, and named Oh-hyun Kwon, currently president of Semiconductor Business, as president of the new entity, says Media Update.

The new organisation is aimed at enhancing cooperation and generating synergy within Samsung's Digital Solutions component businesses focused on technology development, production, procurement and client management.

Through close collaboration and coordination among the memory chip, system LSI and LCD businesses, as well as the mobile display-making affiliate, Samsung Mobile Display, the new system will help enhance competitiveness throughout Samsung's memory and display segments, the company says.
