With the need to store increasing volumes of data these days, one could occasionally get confused when choosing storage devices.

Offered in different shapes, colours and capacities, it's difficult to know which works best for the kind of data one needs to store, be it personal or for business.

So, when SanDisk brought its latest offering to us, the SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 Flash Drive, I felt the need to see what makes it stand out from the rest of the drives already on the market.

Look and feel

Firstly, the drive isn't really different from the ones I've seen before, but its sleek, black and stylish design with soft corners really catches the eye.

A slide mechanism exposes the USB connection, and it's available in storage capacities of up to 64GB.

Usability

To transfer files from a computer, one simply inserts the drive into a USB port and copies the files across.

All in all, the features of the Extreme USB 3.0 Flash Drive are standard - you'd find them in every drive. So what is it that makes it stand out from the rest?

Well, the most notable thing about it is its high data transfer speed, at 190Mbps. Be it small or very large files, it takes just a few minutes to move everything across.

Another feature I found interesting and useful is its password protection and file encryption functionality.

In summary

Pros: Exceptional file transfer speeds up to 190Mbps, password protection with SanDisk SecureAcces Software, includes 2GB of online backup via YuuWaa cloud storage Cons: Forget your password, lose your data Capacity: 16GB to 64GB Rating: 8/10 Recommended retail price: R307

According to SanDisk, the Extreme 3.0 USB Flash Drive comes with the exclusive SanDisk SecureAccess software, which lets users configure a password-protected private folder on the flash drive. Files will be secured with 128-bit AES encryption to help keep them confidential.

Even though this is a very useful feature, one must take care to not forget the password. Once you protect your files, if you forget your password, that data cannot be accessed again.

Online storage

Another feature I found useful is the free online cloud storage service provided by YuuWaa, a storage and backup solution that offers online services through a single Web interface to store and share music, videos, photos or work documents.

The drive comes with up to 2GB of free online storage and backup, which means users can access their files anytime, using any browser.

In a nutshell

The SanDisk Extreme 3.0 USB Flash Drive is very useful for storing both business and personal files. I would highly recommend it simply because of its password protection and file encryption features, as well as its free online cloud backup and storage solution, because it simply means one can access their files anytime and anywhere.
