Canada-based start-up Rave has created a media viewing platform that lets users anywhere in the world watch online videos simultaneously with anyone else, while interacting with them in real-time.
The company says it is combining the most popular mobile activities: watching videos, text messaging and talking over VOIP.
Users are able to watch content from YouTube, Netflix, Vimeo, Reddit, Google Drive and Dropbox, among others. Any smartphone or tablet can be used to watch the videos. Rave also has a RaveVR component which lets multiple users watch the same video in virtual reality.
To watch Netflix together, each user will have to have a Netflix account.
The company says its technology is able to perfectly sync videos and voice and text interaction with multiple users on whichever platform they choose to view from.
"Powered by a millisecond-precise synchronisation engine, Rave can transform a collection of phones into a speaker system, or power international karaoke parties," the company said in a statement.
Enabling voice interaction means users can talk to each other through the app while consuming content - simulating watching a movie together in the same location.
Rave is not limited to people the user knows; there is also an option to watch videos with other Rave users who are online and the user has not met yet.
The app is available to download free from the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Last week, Facebook started testing a similar product called Watch Party, which lets dedicated groups watch the same video 'together' on the platform.
Watch Party has only been rolled out to a select number of groups first. Group admins and moderators choose any videos (live or recorded) on Facebook and broadcast them to group members. The reactions and comments from all members are then displayed to all members watching in real-time.
