Rallies against Philippines RFID project

Philippines transport group Piston will stage protest rallies to condemn the price increase by oil companies and oppose the roll-out of the radio frequency identification (RFID) scheme by the Land Transportation Office (LTO), reports Philstar.

Piston staged a picket rally at the main office of the LTO in Quezon City to oppose the implementation of RFID in vehicles.

Piston secretary-general George San Mateo has called the RFID project a money-making scheme by the government agency.

Siemens bags airport maintenance contract

Siemens Mobility and the Italian company Elsag Datamat have won a maintenance contract from SEA, the operators of the Milanese airports Malpensa and Linate, says RFIDNews.

Siemens will implement a system for the maintenance management that will use RFID technology in the spare parts management sector and in the identification of the maintainable items. Technicians will have PDAs showing all scheduled work and system faults on the display.

The contract, valued at around EUR54 million (R568 million) and a maximal contractual extension of eight years, covers servicing and maintaining the existing baggage handling systems at International Airports Linate and Malpensa, Terminal One and Terminal Two.

RFID to improve US security

Intellicheck Mobilisa is driving its Defense ID System following the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA)'s request to heighten security after the recent attempted terrorist attack aboard an airliner in Detroit, states More RFID.

The Defense ID's rugged handheld will enable security staff to read RFID, barcodes and magnetic stripes printed on current forms of ID cards.

The TSA says its security staff will also be scanning driver licences to cross-check their holders' names with lists of individuals known for engaging in terrorist activity.
