Progress Software has announced that the Developer Edition of its Progress SonicMQ Internet messaging server will support the Linux operating system.
"Linux has shown impressive growth as a client and a server operating environment," says Progress SA MD Rick Parry. "Products which help Linux-based applications communicate with an organisation`s network are important to the ongoing success of Linux. SonicMQ is an example of products which could help Linux evolve into a generally accepted part of corporate networks."
Because SonicMQ is 100% Java, it can run with little or no configuration changes on any platform with a supported Java Virtual Machine.
"The addition of Linux certification will further accelerate SonicMQ`s already rapid adoption," adds Parry.
SonicMQ is the first and only standalone messaging server available from a major software vendor based on Sun`s specification for Java-based messaging, Java Message Service (JMS). By providing a standards-based, reliable and scalable messaging infrastructure for Internet application interoperation, together with key standards beyond the JMS specification such as eXtensible Markup Language (XML), SonicMQ ensures business-to-business transactions are successfully completed.
According to International Data Corp, Linux grew faster than any other server operating environment in both 1998 and 1999. IDC has also predicted commercial Linux shipments will rise at a compounded annual growth rate of 25% through to 2003.
Linux benefits from a worldwide community of experienced programmers and technically savvy academics who have the access to the source code of the operating environment and can enhance and improve the system.
SonicMQ is supported on all platforms running the JavaSoft V1.2 JVM. In addition, Progress RDBMS 9.1, Oracle8i and Microsoft SQL Server V7.0 are certified for use as alternate message stores.
