After years of only allowing cash payments for vehicle licence renewals, the South African Post Office (SAPO) is finally moving away from the dark ages, and will accept debit and credit card payments.
In a statement, SAPO says this payment method will be available at its branches that allow the renewal of car licences.
For the time being, however, the service will be offered in the majority of the country’s nine provinces, except Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.
“The renewal of motor vehicle licences is the most popular transaction at post office branches – clear evidence of the success of this service,” says SAPO.
Responding to a Twitter user questioning when the same service will be made available in the Western Cape, the post office tweeted: “We are negotiating with the Western Cape authorities. Hopefully soon!”
The post office statement goes on to say if motorists have not received a renewal notice, the renewal form can be downloaded online. “Motorists who have received a traffic fine issued in terms of the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences Act may pay the traffic fine at any post office countrywide.”
Meanwhile, the national postal service is in search of a new CEO, following the resignation of its chief executive Mark Barnes earlier this month.
Barnes joined SAPO in 2014, and had the tough task of driving the modernisation and turnaround strategy of the struggling post office.
Commenting on Barnes’s resignation, communications and digital technologies minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams said: “His departure comes at a time when SAPO is charged with driving digital transformation in the postal sector. He played an integral role in strengthening the organisation and trust that our paths will cross again.”
SAPO group COO Lindiwe Kwele has been appointed CEO in the interim.
