Polycom drives cloud content management

Unified communications vendor Polycom has unveiled two cloud-based video content management solutions from its $50 million March acquisition of Accordent Technologies, reports InformationWeek.

Polycom's Accordent Media Management System v 4.5 and Accordent Capture Station v 5.1 automate various steps required to create, manage, and deliver video.

Both products integrate with Polycom's RSS 4000 video server as well as with Microsoft videoconferencing environments such as Lync, SharePoint, SQL, and Silverlight.

Polycom revealed plans earlier this month to acquire HP's visual collaboration business, including its Halo telepresence system for $89 million. “But because that acquisition hasn't yet closed, the HP products aren't part of this announcement,” says John Antanaitis, VP of product marketing at Polycom.

Unified Communications Strategies says among the releases is software for the Polycom UC Intelligent Core platform, featuring enhancements designed to provide a robust platform for scalable video services, and unified communications.

According to CRN, Polycom Accordent Capture Station v 5.1 delivers rich media content using HTML5 to mobile devices, as well as new support for Microsoft Expression Encoder and Microsoft Smooth Streaming.

Wainhouse Research says Polycom increased its market share in video endpoint units shipped to 45% in the first quarter of 2011; a nine-point gain from the previous quarter.

Cisco's endpoint unit share in shipments is 25%, according to Wainhouse, although it continued to lead Polycom in endpoint revenues: 39% to 34% share.
