As buzz continues to grow around the impending release of the iPhone 5, the rumour mill is working overtime after images of possible iPhone 5 cases were posted online.
The images appeared briefly on the site of Case-Mate before being replaced by a cryptic page, saying: “We'll have your cases when you have your new iPhone.”
As a result of the images, speculation is rife that the new-generation iPhone will be slimmer and lighter, with tapered edges. The frame appeared to be half-an-inch wider and slightly longer than previous models. Estimated measurements of the new cases are five inches tall and 2.8 inches wide - iPhone 5 measurements are, therefore, expected to be just a few millimetres smaller. It also appeared to have an aluminium back.
A peak at the screen protector also showed an elongated home button. The mute button has also been moved to the opposite side of the volume keys. The base shows holes for a separate speaker, main microphone and a USB dock connector.
There appears to be a very slight tear-drop shape in the design - going from thick to thin from top to bottom.
Last month, rumours of the iPhone 5's LTE capabilities also surfaced as the device was suspected to be in carrier testing phase.
Head of Verizon Wireless Dan Mead is reported to have said to the press earlier this year: “We'll see more coming from Apple on LTE. They understand the value proposition of LTE and I feel very confident that they are going to be part of it.”
Apple is, however, yet to make any formal announcements regarding the iPhone 5, and speculation continues as to whether it will be a small upgrade of the iPhone 4 or a major redesign.
The company is expected to make the announcement at its annual September launch event - which has traditionally been used to unveil new iPod releases in anticipation of the Christmas shopping season.
