Photo sold for world record price
"The Pond-Moonlight", a photograph taken by Edward Steichen in 1904, was auctioned for $2.9 million (more than R17.5 million) at Sotheby`s in New York. This amount set a new sale record for the priciest photograph sold, reports BBC News. The image depicts a body of water, reflecting a woody background with light shining through trees.
There are two other copies of the image in existence, both in museum collections. The 41 x 48cm print was put up for sale by the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. Steichen was a pioneer in colour photography, and one of the first American photographers to experiment with the autochrome.
