Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications has recommended five names to fill the three vacancies on the council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA).
ICASA currently has five councillors following the swearing in of Palesa Kadi and Dimakatso Qocha as members of the council on 28 September. Botlenyana Mokhele, Peter Zimri and Keabetswe Modimoeng began their four-year terms in April last year.
According to the portfolio committee, the selection of the five candidates follows an interview process that concluded last month. The candidates are: Nomonde Gongxeka-Seope, Thembeka Simane, Kate Skinner, Lulama Mokhobo and Rubben Mohlaloga.
Mohlaloga was ICASA's acting chairperson until his tenure came to an end in September. He also served as councillor at the regulator.
In a statement, the committee says the recommended names will be tabled in the National Assembly for final adoption, and then forwarded to the minister of communications for appointment.
"The committee is confident the recommended candidates possess the requisite skills pertinent to the task, which include corporate governance, leadership, finance and legal," says Humphrey Maxegwana, chairperson of the communications portfolio committee.
"They also displayed thorough knowledge of the telecommunications and regulatory sector."
