Orion Telecom takes integrated service offering to Namibia

By Strategy One Communications
Johannesburg, 29 May 2008

Following Orion Telecom's acquisition of Namibian company Telecom Ericsson late last year, the company has officially changed its name and begun operating in the region as Orion Telecom Namibia from 1 April 2008.

The PBX company, previously a privately-owned family-run business, services 25% of the Namibian corporate and government market. Earlier in 2007, Orion parent Vox Telecom itself bought Definity Telecom Namibia, which provides least cost routing solutions for large Namibian corporates. Following the buyouts, Orion is now the first service provider in that country to offer fully integrated telecommunications solutions.

"We have consolidated our service offering in Namibia," says Jacques du Toit, MD of Orion Telecom. "The establishment of our operation there has given Orion access to a whole new customer base and is in line with our ongoing expansion into the continent."

Orion provides a full range and voice and data solutions for the Namibian corporate and government sectors. The company has established points of presence (POPs) in Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Keetmanshoop, Otjiwarango, Tsumeb, Ondangwa and Oranjemund.

"No other single operation in Namibia can provide the range of services that Orion has on offer," adds Du Toit. "What is also of benefit to the Namibian market is that all our products and solutions are all in-house and owned, manufactured and supported by Orion, so clients have one central point of contact."

The integration of the two Namibian companies into the Vox Telecom group was concluded with the existing management teams and there were no staff cutbacks, a factor which Du Toit attributes to the smooth handling of the transaction and the success of the deal.

"Employees were not affected by the acquisition as they are an intrinsic part of the relationships that Telecom Ericsson, a highly respected operator in Namibia, had developed with its clients over a period of almost two decades," notes Du Toit.
