A computerised stock management, customer database and virtual marketplace environment, and a vehicle tracking system - tailored to suit new and used car dealers - has been developed by Oracle Consulting in association with AutoScan Information Systems (ASIS).
The Internet-based system, known as AutoScan 2000 (www.asis.co.za) makes use of Oracle database and internet technology and is targeted at the vehicle retail market by ASIS, a Cape-based systems house. The hardware, infrastructure and support are provided by CompuScan Information Technologies.
It is expected to be used by more than 3000 dealers throughout the country. A broad acceptance of the system is forecast by CompuScan because of its low cost entry level, ease of use and minimum need for training.
Oracle`s Consulting Services division was responsible for systems analysis, as well as the design and development of the system. The project was completed in four months.
In future, on-line finance facilities and life and insurance services as well as credit check facilities will be added to the system.
CompuScan MD Chris Olivier, says Oracle`s database and Designer/2000 solutions facilitated the rapid development of the product which will allow motor dealers to gain immediate access to pricing, specifications and availability of second-hand vehicles.
"The ASIS system makes it easier for dealerships around the country to provide their customers with an excellent service," he says. "It relieves dealers of information technology headaches and allows them to concentrate on client service. At the same time it lets dealers use modern Internet technology to find and move stock faster, share information and cut costs."
