Operator-assisted call number changes from 0020 to 1025

0020, one of South Africa`s most frequently dialed numbers - through which Telkom`s operator-assisted calls such as Collect or Reverse Charge Calls and Trunk Call bookings are placed - has changed to 1025.

Over 150 000 calls are recorded each day through the 0020 number and dealt with by Telkom operators.

Customers wishing to contact the operators should now dial the new number, which is already operational, says Telkom`s Senior Executive for Customer Service, Bob Rankin.

Calls to Telkom`s operator-assisted services (number 1025) remain free of charge, as they have been for over 20 years.

The number change has been requested by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA). As part of the country`s numbering plan, ICASA requires the "00" prefix for the dialing code of international numbers in future. The existing international dialing code is "09".

Telkom`s directories and customer information displayed at all payphones and elsewhere are being updated with the new number.

While the 0020 number will operate alongside 1025 till the end of July 2001, Telkom urges users to get used to the new number early by dialing 1025.
