Ontario urged to move more classes online

A report before the Ontario government is calling for universities and colleges to move a third of their courses online - a proposal that's received a failing grade from a prominent students' organisation, CBC News says.

The draft report obtained by The Canadian Press calls for a shift towards Web-based learning that would have students take up to three courses out of five online each semester.

The report says that with online learning, professors could have more time to meet and mentor students, TheStar.com reports.

“Technology is driving changes worldwide in education and it is important that Ontario recognise and respond to these changes in order that credentials from Ontario PSE institutions hold their value,” it says.

According to 106.9 FM, Veronic Barahona, Fanshawe student union president, says that if the Ontario government intends to go forward with this plan, then she hopes student and faculty input is taken into account so that everyone can get the education they need to move forward.
