OnStream aims to replace Travan, DAT technologies

Announcing the appointment of Intelligent Systems as its sole distributor in SA, OnSteam says its Advanced Digital Recording (ADR) technology will eventually replace Travan and Digital Audio Tape (DAT) technology to become the preferred backup technology in the market.

The privately owned company says it will aggressively focus on the local market to sell its tape backup products.

OnStream, which has already had a presence in SA for more than a year, believes the local market will prove to be lucrative. "The International Data Corporation (IDC) reports that we already have 11% of the DAT market and 20% of the Travan market in Europe. We believe the same can be achieved in SA," says Syd Virdi, OnStream VP of international sales and marketing.

OnStream provides capacity storage products for entry-level servers, workstations and power desktops. Its products, based on its patented ADR technology, were previously distributed by Storage Africa.

The company says that operating through a sole distributor is a financially sound decision, as Virdi believes one distributor will be able to supply and service the various target markets.

"This means we are in the position to protect the brand and the user with an equal sales and pricing structure," says Intelligent Systems MD Chris Roux.

Virdi says profits will take a back seat for now, as "we really want to get brand awareness, and with Intelligent Systems we can gain more business. We want to leave the customer with no choice but OnStream."

OnStream, a spin-off company originally formed by Philips Electronics, says its hi-tech research and development lab in Europe allows it to constantly adapt its products to market needs.
