Olympics boost Chinese ratings
At least 840 million Chinese watched some of the Olympics 2008 Beijing opening ceremony, on China Central Television (CCTV), says NYtimes.com.
While NBC is celebrating an average prime-time audience of 29 million viewers in the US, CCTV is smashing ratings records everywhere.
The opening ceremony had an average audience of nearly half a billion people, and 842 million watched at least a minute of it, according to CSM Media Research.
Net prepares for political showdown
Internet companies including Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft are planning to use this year's political conventions to show off their technology and products, says Cnet.
There are Webcasts, alerts sent via text messaging, and an announcement that Sirius XM Radio will carry live and uninterrupted audio from the conventions.
Google and Microsoft have signed up to be "official convention providers".
Intel, Yahoo brings Internet to TV
Intel and Yahoo previewed plans for the Widget Channel, a television application framework optimised for TV and related consumer electronics devices that use the Intel architecture, according to News Wire.
The Widget Channel will be powered by the Yahoo Widget Engine, a fifth-generation applications platform that will enable TV watchers to interact with Internet applications designed to enhance traditional TV.
The Widget Channel will also allow developers to use Javascript, XML, HTML and Adobe Flash technology to write TV applications for the platform, extending the power and compatibility of PC application developer programs to TV and related CE devices.
