Communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda has relieved with immediate effect his most senior public servant Mamodupi Mohlala of her duties, saying the trust between the two had broken down.
A terse statement issued late today said that Nyanda and his deputy minister Dina Pule had met with Mohlala to resolve issues that had “threatened the day-to-day operations of the department and had sought to impact negatively on the image of the organisation.”
The statement says that: “In the process of trying to find solutions to the challenges, it subsequently became apparent that trust between the Minister and the Director General has broken down irretrievably.
“In the interests of the Department, the staff and the government, the Minister has come to the conclusion that it would be best to release Ms Mohlala from her position as Director General with effect from 23 July 2010.
Harold Wesso has been appointed as Acting Director General until a permanent replacement is found to ensure that the work of the department is not negatively affected by these developments.
The statement said that the Minister wishes Ms Mohlala well in the future.
Mohlala has served as director general of the DOC for just under a year.
She is the second director general of a government department to vacate their positions in two days. Yesterday the director general of the Land Affairs Department resigned after his contract was “reassessed.”
