Nokia dumps Psion protocol

Nokia has decided to drop the old and generally unloved Psion Link Protocol (PLP) in favour of the standard TCP/IP protocol, according to sources quoted on The Register this morning. The Psion Link Protocol is part of the Symbian operating system created by the Psion company. The adoption of TCP/IP is good news for operating system developers who want to support these phones. To date, developers have had to support the now ancient PLP which was first introduced with the Series 3 Psion PDA almost a decade ago. Psion no longer makes consumer personal digital assistants. Want a PlayStation2 Web server? You can, if you`re prepared to download the binary build of Apache 2.0.39. The 11MB download, provided by Chris Taylor, runs the world`s most popular Web server on a PlayStation2 machine using the Sony-released Linux kit. Taylor, who admits the market for PlayStation Apache may be small, says he plans to build each new release of the Web server in an effort to increase the profile of Linux on the PS2. "With any luck, by making binaries for it more high-profile, more people will purchase the PS2 kit, and hence get interested in Linux," says Taylor. [More]

With voice services becoming increasingly commoditised, network operators are turning to data-related offerings to boost ailing revenues and it seems as if gaming is going to be a big part of this strategy. A survey released by Frost & Sullivan last week indicates that globally the mobile gaming market generated $436 million in 2001 and predicts that this could grow to more than $9 billion by 2008. The big hurdle, however, is the issue of micro billing because consumers are still apprehensive about making over-the-air payments with credit cards.
