The proliferation of mobile devices, social media and IP-enabled devices has resulted in an explosion of data, and data centres can no longer plan for redundancy, as there is simply too much information for a select group of individuals to manage.
So says CXO advisor Kim Andersen, who points out that this is a new phenomenon. Previously, large volumes of data were managed in a structure-like form, such as a database or enterprise resource planning (ERP) system.
Petabytes are now a reality, he says. As a result of the sheer volume of data that is being collected and analysed, organisations must now re-think the entire operations model. Added to this is a lack of skills because one needs new ways to administer the data centre, as well as new analytical skills in order to use data most efficiently, Andersen says.
Andersen is a speaker at the ITWeb Business Intelligence (BI) Summit, where he will discuss tools and strategies to manage, integrate, search and use big data, as well as the challenges big data poses for BI practitioners.
The BI Summit also features a host of local and international industry experts, who will be addressing everything and anything you need to know about BI. The event takes place on 28 and 29 February, with a workshop, entitled ”A practical guide to virtualisation”, hosted by international BI expert Rick van der Lans, on 1 March.
