New tri-radio access point boosts wireless LAN security

Duxbury Networking has introduced a new tri-radio wireless access point from its principal, Colubris Networks, designed to bolster security in corporate networks which conform to the latest wireless network standards (802.11a/b/g).

The Colubris MultiService Access Point 630 Sensor (MAP-630 Sensor) offers continuous, dedicated radio-frequency monitoring without compromising the quality and performance of voice, video and data services which these standards optimise.

The MAP-630 Sensor is targeted at multi-application networks commonly found in medium to large enterprises where two wireless channels of access capacity are required to meet performance objectives. It provides users with protection from unwanted and potentially harmful network intrusions and hacker attacks.

"Today's high performance wireless networks are regularly subjected to security threats that cannot be intercepted and neutralised by conventional firewall and VPN [virtual private network] security systems," says Andy Robb, chief technology officer at Duxbury Networking.

"This leaves the networks vulnerable and puts organisations at risk - and in potential violation of regulatory requirements.

"The MAP-630 Sensor delivers simultaneous high performance access for 802.11a and 802.11 b/g clients, allowing organisations to enjoy reliable performance for high-bandwidth business applications as well as full-time network security," he says.

Robb warns users to be wary of alternative RF (radio frequency) monitoring options, particularly 'dual radio' access points which only perform intermittent security scans, interrupting the flow of client traffic and negatively impacting application performance.

"In addition, organisations are often encouraged to deploy a separate overlay network of dedicated security sensors, which doubles equipment costs and substantially increases ongoing maintenance expenses," he adds.

Technical perspective

From a technical perspective, the Colubris MAP-630 Sensor brings a new level of security, performance and flexibility to enterprise WLAN deployments, with three dedicated 802.11 a/b/g radios: one each for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, and one dedicated to continuous RF security monitoring across both bands.

The MAP-630 Sensor is part of the award-winning Colubris Intelligent Mobility Solution, an optimised WLAN switching system that combines high performance client access with integrated best-of-breed RF security. The solution performs full-frequency security scans that accurately detect and classify over 150 different WLAN events, threats and vulnerabilities without false positives.
