New Siemens intranet hits right key with employees

Siemens Southern Africa has revamped its intranet as part of Siemens' global drive to empower its employees and increase efficiency through a common online presence. The new intranet went live on 19 August, and has been greeted with a positive response from employees.

The original Siemens intranet was developed organically, making for a convoluted system wherein employees struggled to find the information they required. The new intranet creates a predictable user experience that adds value to its use as an effective business tool.

Employees are able to help themselves by means of a process of global knowledge sharing, offering direct access to any worldwide Siemens intranet. This optimises processes and ensures a better service for the company's customers.

The new intranet features several innovations designed to assist employees in functioning more efficiently, such as reference information and a library with archived material of previous projects and their specifications.

After an extensive evaluation of both local and international content management systems, Siemens Southern Africa selected Pretoria-based Flux Interactive as its strategic partner in the revamp project.

Flux Interactive's content management system, Intranet Easy, met the requirements of ease of use, workflow management and providing a flexible system able to integrate with other conventional business systems.

"An intranet site is only as effective as its content and its usability," said Hendrik Minnie, Managing Director of Flux Interactive.

"It is all about different ways to reach specific content. Providing more than one logical way to reach this content doubles the worth of what's available.

"The Flux IntranetEasy content management system makes it possible for non-technical people, without any Web site development knowledge, to create and regularly update Web pages. They can do this without compromising the security, quality and overall look and feel of the Web site.

"The system is scalable, easy to use, cost-effective and caters for structured and unstructured data types."

The firm Electric Monk acted as a consultant to the project.
