New eight-way HP NetServer LXr 8500, HP NetServer LH 4 and HP NetServer LXr 8000 systems to support Pentium III Xeon 500MHz processor

Johannesburg, 20 May 1999

Hewlett-Packard Company has announced plans for the HP NetServer LXr 8500 system, HP`s second-generation eight-way server, as well as support of the Intel Pentium(R) III Xeon 500MHz processor in the HP NetServer LH 4 and NetServer LXr 8000 systems.

The HP NetServer LXr 8500 system will leverage HP`s long-standing enterprise experience and continues in the tradition of the market-leading eight-way server, the HP NetServer LXr Pro8 system.

"The next-generation eight-way HP NetServer LXr 8500 system will build upon HP`s leadership in the enterprise and midmarket spaces," said Andrew Fletcher, HP networking and netservers product manager.

HP NetServer LXr 8500 System Highlights

The HP NetServer LXr 8500 system will match many UNIX(R) systems by maximising system uptime and user productivity while making administration and support easier than ever before. The HP NetServer LXr 8500 system will include the following features:

  • increased system performance, with scalability and manageability on a par with UNIX systems;

  • high-density form-factor (7U height) that allows for five systems in a standard 2-meter rack to maximise floor space;

  • architecture-balancing scalability (memory, I/O, processor) and high-end volume building block; and standard-availability features, including cluster certification, hot-pluggable PCI and pre-installed HP TopTools Remote Control Card for remote management

Pentium III Xeon Enhances Computing Performance The HP NetServer LXr 8000 and LXr 8500 systems will be available with 512KB, 1MB and 2MB cache sizes. These systems will be suitable for all levels of mission-critical enterprise applications for the data centre. Further details on the HP NetServer LXr 8500 system will be available in late spring.

The HP NetServer LH 4 system provides great value for entry-level enterprise-server applications. The new HP NetServer LH 4 system 500MHz model will be available with 512KB or 1MB cache sizes and is expected to ship in April. In addition, HP NetServer systems also will support the Pentium III 550MHz processor when it is available.

"The multiprocessing capabilities of the Pentium III Xeon processor provide the building blocks for a wide range of scalable solutions for high-end applications," said John Miner, vice president and general manager, Intel Enterprise Server Group. "HP`s NetServer product line takes advantage of these capabilities to deliver an affordable, flexible and scalable solution to address today`s business environment."
