JSE-listed Altech has appointed Laurence Savage as COO with effect from next January, filling a position that has been vacant since the beginning of this year, after former Telkom CEO Jeffrey Hedberg unexpectedly quit.

The announcement comes just more than two weeks after Altech CEO Craig Venter said he expected to make an appointment within weeks.

Venter says: "Savage's experience globally, his knowledge of the African continent, as well as his educational background and leadership ability make him a perfect fit for the role of COO, given the group's offering and its future plans."

Among his many senior management roles, Savage was previously MD of Genrec Engineering and Hall Longmore, a structural steel fabricator and pipe manufacturing company, respectively. (Genrec Engineering and Hall Longmore are part of the Murray and Roberts Group.)

Savage was also CE at Avis Fleet Services, where he was responsible for the entire Southern Africa cluster.

"We are convinced that Savage will offer insights that will further bolster the Altech management team as we move the group towards sustainable growth," adds Venter.

Savage has both engineering and business qualifications, with an MBA from Milpark Business School. He also completed an advanced executive programme at Northwest University, in Chicago, USA.
