New communications technologies seen for the first time in SA at Futurex

Tellumat Communications introduced SA to enterprise GSM along with other exciting new products, at the Futurex exhibition recently held at the Sandton Convention Centre. Tellumat demonstrated its total solution concept across its telecommunications product range.

Tellumat`s Neill Friedman says: "The Communications Division offers a wide range of telecommunications products and services including GSM mobile, business systems, radio and access products and communications software to information and communications technology (ICT) customers worldwide, with various synergies between the product and solution sets. The value of the total solution of all these products combined is far greater than the sum of the product parts that make up these solutions."

The single "office in a box" PBX and networking product (Tellumat`s Convergence 30), not only provided the LAN infrastructure for the Tellumat stand but the WAN connection via ADSL, allowing high-speed data access to all the devices on the stand. This PBX was also connected to a Convergence 100 traditional PBX, which ran an extension to a M762 dual purpose desktop handset. This handset uses a GSM SIM card to allow access either via GSM or a fixed analogue line.

The Convergence 100 was also linked to an IP Gateway, which connected both an analogue and an IP phone to the central devices over an IP link (as would happen in a remote office set-up).

The phenomenal acceptance and growth of GSM based products in both South Africa and the African continent, has exceeded the most optimistic predictions. Tellumat showcased its M744 GSM community payphones and controllers, which have rapidly earned a large share of the growing mobile payphone market in Africa. They are complemented by the GSM hands-free feature phone, aimed at home and business users throughout the developing world as an alternative to a fixed-line service.

Tellumat`s Lloyd Marshall says: "Our experience in the design and management of payphone systems has provided a solid foundation for Tellumat to supply a diverse range of products and services. These include electronic voucher distribution, point of sales solutions, remote stock management systems, GSM interfaces, least-cost routing devices and a range of innovative mobile communication solutions."

Tying these and other mobile devices to the enterprise is Tellumat`s new GSM enterprise PBX. This technology allows an end-user`s cellphone to become an internal extension of the PBX when the user is in range of his home base stations, ie on the campus. Friedman explains further that "this particular product gives us three distinct applications: firstly as mentioned the GSM enterprise PBX which is integrated into the traditional TDM or IP PBX; secondly there is the operator infill configuration allowing us to help the cellphone operators to greatly reduce the cost of entry in terms of providing cellphone coverage in those areas where previously the business case may not have made financial sense - this will allow the operators to more successfully meet their social upliftment obligations as well as provide coverage to closed user, business or community groups; finally the GSM island configuration allows for the creation of closed cellphone communities with links back into other networks or infrastructures using IP as a carrier over any supporting infrastructure, ie satellite."

Other products on show at the Tellumat stand included the Inter-Tel range of PBXs that Tellumat will launch in the local market towards the end of July. More information on this product range will be available closer to the launch.

The pride of Tellumat`s software solutions is Callsuite: a holistic, computerised office telephony solution, which encompasses every aspect of telephone management in a way that improves customer service and productivity. Callsuite is an integrated suite of telecommunication software products, combining messaging (e-mail, voicemail, fax, SMS, etc), user configuration and call accounting into one unified offering. These applications are PBX product independent and will work on most PBX platforms, forming a key component in terms of the management and optimal utilisation of total voice and data communications solutions.

In summary, the Tellumat stand at the Futurex exhibition provided an exciting working example of the total solution concept. Interfacing and networking all your communications technologies, both voice and data, into a single, well managed, converged infrastructure provides businesses today with leverage for reducing overheads and increasing productivity.
