Seagate Software, the pioneer of Enterprise Information Management and a provider of network storage management solutions for Microsoft Windows NT Server and Windows NT Workstation, today launched Seagate Backup Exec Desktop 98 concurrent with the release of Windows 98.
With the application, Seagate Software officials say they are delivering a reliable and comprehensive backup solution to users of Windows 98 and Windows 95. The company has also provided the native backup utility for Microsoft`s new operating system.
"Seagate Backup Exec Desktop 98 provides uncompromising protection of desktop data in home, SME and corporate network environments. With its advanced backup and data restore functions for Windows 98 and Windows 95, the solution makes information easily available when, where and how users want it," says Nick van Noordwyk, regional manager, Middle East and Africa, Seagate Software Network and Storage Management Group.
Seagate Backup Exec Desktop 98 supports the most popular CD-R and CD-RW devices which provide write once, read many (WORM) and CD-rewritable capabilities to backup. Other key enhancements include:
- Emergency Restore - automatically rebuilds the operating system and restores the latest full backup directly from secondary storage in the event of disc failure, eliminating the need to reinstall Windows and Seagate Backup Exec manually before restoring data.
- Catalog/File Find - locates any previously backed up files with the catalog search engine for hassle-free restores.
- Scheduling - unattended backup operations during off-hours or intermittent backups is simplified using the Advanced Scheduling Options.
- Enhanced Device Support - provides backup flexibility and compatibility to the widest variety of devices including most FDC/PPT mini-cartridge tapes; SCSI/IDE mini-cartridges; 4mm DATs; 8mm tapes; SCSI/IDE removable discs (Zip; Jaz; SyQuest; Magneto Optical; PD/CD); and CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
- File Specification - enables backups to diskettes, hard drives and network drives or any other mapped device.
- Complete Windows 98 Protection - protects data on Windows 98/95. Long filenames are supported and the Windows Registry is backed up.
- Plug and Play simplifies installation and configuration.

Seagate Backup Exec Desktop 98 carries the Microsoft `Designed For Windows 98` logo and is immediately available in English, French, German and Spanish through Seagate Software`s global TeamExec network of resellers. Version upgrades are also available for existing users of Seagate Backup Exec for Windows 95.
