Netscape launched, patched

America Online`s new Netscape 8.0 had to be patched on the same day it debuted.

According to InformationWeek, Netscape 8.0 was built using the code from Firefox 1.0.3, but Mozilla recently upgraded its browser to fix several vulnerabilities. With the update released Thursday, Netscape is now a clone, security-wise, with the current Firefox 1.0.4.

Without the update, users visiting sites rendered with the Gecko engine could be at risk. Attackers could use the now-patched vulnerabilities to take control of a PC simply by getting a user to visit a malicious Web site.

Details on the fixes in Netscape 8.0.1 have been posted on Netscape`s support section, and the new version can be downloaded from the home page of AOL`s Netscape site.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) wants to enter the consumer electronics market with a new line of Geode chips for gadgets, News.com reports.

The new Geode LX800 is an energy-efficient processor for small computers, set-top boxes, TVs and handhelds. The chip runs at 533MHz and is said to provide the equivalent performance of an 800MHz processor from Via Technologies.

Both Intel and AMD have begun to squeeze their chips into consumer electronics devices. Intel won a contract to supply Celeron chips for a Microsoft set-top box and is working on a line of chips derived from its notebook and desktop lines for CE devices. AMD, meanwhile, earlier released the Geode NX line.

These chips are used in the Personal Internet Communicator promoted by AMD in India.

Mobile operator Orange UK has decided that TV on cellphones is mature enough to be launched to the market.

From next week, British consumers who have 3G mobile phones and are customers of Orange will be able to watch nine channels on their phones, reports Softpedia news. The service will cost lb10 (R120).

The full channel list available for the launch is a mixture of sport, news and entertainment channels. Channels available to customers include ITN News, CNN, Big Brother, Celebrity Love Island, Comedy Time, Cartoon Network, Toon World, Fashion TV and extreme sports.

All of the channels will be streamed over the Orange 3G network and are available through the new Orange TV section on Orange World.
