The National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) has signed the research and education network service agreement.

The diagnostic pathology service organisation will use the Internet services via Tertiary Education and Research Network of SA (Tenet).

NHLS is the sole provider of diagnostic pathology services to the public sector in SA. Its diagnostic laboratories are found in provincial and district hospitals in large metropolitan centres and remote rural areas as well as in the teaching hospitals of university medical schools.

According to Tenet, NHLS is sourcing its own connectivity to gain access to the South African National Research Network (Sanren) backbone through its nearest node.

“This is especially beneficial for long distances since the lab supports the national and provincial health departments in the delivery of healthcare. NHLS will be able to use the Sanren capacity systematically in connecting all of their laboratories across SA to their data centres in Johannesburg,” Tenet says.

NHLS will retain the responsibility for providing the connection to Sanren points of presence, Tenet adds.

“The addition of NHLS brings the number of sites that Tenet services up to 53 institutions with an approximate number of 120 campuses among these. NHLS will also have access to international Internet access via Tenet,” the research network says.

NHLS provides laboratory and related services to over 80% of the population through a national network of labs.

Its specialised divisions include the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, National Institute for Occupational Health, National Cancer Registry and Anti-venom Unit.
