NASA supports open source

Space agency, NASA has unveiled a Web site, located at code.nasa.gov, aimed at centralising the agency's open source software efforts, Fedscoop reports.

According to GCN, the Web site acts as a forum for introducing open source projects and discussing existing ones.

The introduction of the hub comes as NASA reveals it is contributing to a public repository hosted by the code-sharing Web site Github.

NASA anticipates rolling out the site in three phases, Information Week states.

William Eshagh of NASA's Ames Research Centre, says: "Ultimately, our goal is to create a highly visible community hub that will imbue open concepts into the formulation stages of new hardware and software projects, and help existing projects transition to open modes of development and operation.

"We believe that tomorrow's space and science systems will be built in the open, and that code.nasa.gov will play a big part in getting us there."
