Definitely an improvement on the previous version, the N-Gage gamedeck will not embarrass by requiring the awkward "talking into the side of the device" and eases frustrations with a more accessible insertion slot for games.
Adjustable sound from the internal hands-free speaker is clear and the impressive full-colour 3D graphics make for a satisfying gaming experience. Comfortable to hold, the gamedeck`s keypad is reminiscent of PlayStation controls and vibrates during gameplay.
Multiplayer fun
The N-Gage Arena, an online platform for N-Gage users (with GPRS connectivity), provides social and competitive interaction for users from around the world. Even owners of older N-Gage handsets can be part of the action by downloading launch software.
The N-Gage Web site provides users with everything they need to know to get started with interactive tutorials and user manuals. It was rather disappointing to note however, that the Web site does not cater for SA specifically.
Another mode of multiplayer gameplay is via Bluetooth from one N-Gage gamedeck to another. This has its limitations, as both players have to be in possession of a gamedeck and the same game cartridge.
Screenshots can be taken at any time during gameplay by pressing pre-programmed hot keys, and MMSed to (presumably) other gamers. I found this feature irritating, because once the screenshot is captured, a command prompts the user to name the image, disrupting gameplay.
The games
Once a game cartridge is inserted the game begins to play automatically (this is a setting that can be changed), and loading screens are relatively short.
Although most games come with comprehensive tutorials it was nice to see most games of the same genre had standardised keys. For example, the same keys were assigned to the accelerator, the break and turbo in the different racing games.
By pressing the menu button, the game can be paused and exited at any time and will automatically revert to telephone mode if a call comes through.
Game cartridges are purchased separately for the device, but demos can be downloaded from the Web site for trial purposes before purchase.
An annoying feature of the N-Gage was the "OK" button which, when pushed in phone mode, causes the game instantly resume. This can be startling when done by accident. The only way to prevent this from happening is to physically remove the game cartridge.
The phone itself, although it has all the personal information management features of a regular Nokia, lacks a feature many of us have come to expect in a phone - a camera.
