Mobile operator MTN has reported subscriber figures totalling over 13 million for its operations throughout Africa, as of 31 December 2004.
According to MTN, subscriber figures across its African networks amounted to 13 380 000, which is a growth of 21.1% since 30 September last year and an increase of 40.2% from its opening base of 9 543 000 subscribers recorded on 1 April 2004.
According to group CEO Phuthuma Nhleko, its international operations now account for 42% - or 5 661 000 - of the total subscriber base.
The company defines a subscriber in SA as someone who has made or received a call within a period of the last 90 days, and in its international operations as being someone who has made or received a call within the past 30 days.
MTN South Africa increased its subscriber base by 12.2% from September, which amounts to 7 719 000 subscribers, of which 1 355 000 are postpaid, with the remainder being prepaid.
It also reported that blended average revenue per user (ARPU) increased from R187 to R189 for the period from 1 April, with prepaid ARPU sitting at R99 and postpaid recorded at R586.
"We are pleased with our subscriber growth during this period, as our international operations recorded an increase of 35.7% since 30 September 2004," says Nhleko.
"Nigeria, in particular, contributed an impressive 69% of this, to record nearly four million subscribers in total. This high connection in Nigeria can be in part attributed to the drop in the connection fee, which occurred in October 2004."
