Following the tragic loss of four senior executives from its Cameroon operations, MTN says it has deployed its VP for the West Africa region to MTN Cameroon.

Earlier this month, MTN Cameroon lost CEO Campbell Utton, CFO Sarah Stewart, company secretary Patrick Njamfa, and network engineer Patrice Enam, as Kenyan Airways flight KQ 507 crashed into a mangrove swamp, approximately 20km south-east of Douala.

The four executives were flying to SA for management meetings.

In order to assist and support its team at MTN Cameroon, MTN's group corporate affairs says the JSE-listed company has deployed VP Christian de Faria to the region.

"While MTN Cameroon staff is going through a challenging time, the operation has a strong management team, which has limited the impact of our tragedy on operations. We will assess the situation as it unfolds and the necessary management arrangements will be made in due course," it said yesterday.

De Faria was appointed to the post shortly before the closing of MTN's 2006 acquisition of Investcom. Before joining the company, de Faria was CEO of PT Excelcomindo Pratama, the third-largest mobile operator in Indonesia; as well as serving as CEO of Telekom Malaysia International, the investment arm of Telekom Malaysia.
