MS drives east African ICT development

The East African Community (EAC) has inked a deal with Microsoft to spur digital development in the region, reports IT News Africa.

Microsoft chairman for Africa, Cheick Diarra, says inter-regional cooperation is necessary to improve IT in Africa and realise the Millennium Development Goals.

The EAC claims the partnership will explore how ICT can drive closer political, economic, and social cooperation in Africa, while addressing common development challenges.

SingTel eyes Africa

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) is eyeing acquisitions in the fast-growing Africa and Middle East markets, states Economic Times.

The company earns three-quarters of its core earnings from outside Singapore. SingTel CEO Chua Sock Koong says: "Our focus remains in Asia. That's unchanged. We are also looking at some adjacent markets including Africa and the Middle East.”

Facing a domestic market of five million people where virtually everyone has a mobile phone, SingTel has spent S$18 billion (R97.8 billion) in recent years buying stakes in India, Indonesia, and the Australian market.

No bids for Zain yet

The resignation of Kuwaiti-based Zain's chief executive, Saad al-Barrak, has ignited rumours of the possible sale of Zain Africa operations, according to The Daily Nation.

Zain says it has not received any offers for its African mobile networks, despite reports that it is in talks with three major international operators.

Over the past few years, Zain has rapidly expanded and spent billions on acquisitions, now operating in 23 countries in Africa and the Middle East.
