Mobile sports content provider SMS Streamer will relocate all of its software development work from India to Cape Town, following the substantial growth of its business in SA.
With the new office, located in the Cape Town Convention Centre Towers, the company hopes to expand its operations into the rest of Africa.
The local company is part of the US-based SMS Steamer Inc, a provider of mobile content, applications and mobile barcodes. It provides free mobile soccer and rugby content across different platforms to South African mobile users.
According to SMS Streamer, in the past month alone, its soccer content was accessed two million times in SA.
Vote of confidence
"Our business has exploded in SA since we launched a bouquet of mobile content and services for the 2010 World Cup. The time was ripe to open up our head office for Africa in Cape Town to be closer to our customers and business partners,” says MD Mischa Koedderitzsch.
“Cape Town offers an excellent talent base, fed by its world-class universities, business schools and software development firms. It is also home to many of the country's top mobile and Internet firms, as well as many leading digital agencies.”
Koedderitzsch adds that the investment in SA and Cape Town, in particular, is a strong vote of confidence in local creative and technical skills.
"We believe our business will grow from strength to strength in its new home,” says Koedderitzsch.
SMS Streamer will also now be closer to one of its major business partners, MXit. The two companies have a content agreement that allows MXit users free access to SMS Streamer's World Soccer and Rugby portal.
For the fans
The content is also available on world-sports.co.za and covers real-time major football and rugby events from around the world, including the South African PSL, English Premier League, French Ligue 1, German Bundesliga, Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga, Vodacom Super Rugby, Vodacom Cup, Tri Nations, Six Nations and the European Rugby Cup.
Mobile users receive free SMS match reminders and live score feeds during games. SMS Streamer's mobile sports content also includes news, results, logs, statistics and free SMS match reminders and live score feeds during games.
In addition to SA, the company is already active in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana, and plans to grow throughout the continent in the months to come.
"The small screen has proven itself as a great outlet for sports content for people who want to keep in touch with teams, scores and more wherever they are. We look forward to growing our business by providing sports fans with the up-to-the-minute content at no cost,” concludes Koedderitzsch.
