Maserati has released images of its prototype all-electric GranTurismo, which is expected to make its debut in 2022.
The Italian automaker has been testing various prototypes of the vehicle over the past few months. It will be the company's first fully-electric vehicle.
The first prototype of the new Maserati GranTurismo was driven out of the Maserati Innovation Lab and photographed on the streets of Modena.
While Maserati hasn’t released many details of the car, industry insiders anticipate the new sports vehicle will be faster than the old model, which reached 97kmph in the mid-four-second range.
“Ahead of the launch of the new model, the prototype cars are currently undergoing a period of intensive road and circuit testing, in various conditions of use, to acquire vital data for the preparation of the final setup,” says Maserati on its Web site.
The previous GranTurismo range was produced by the Italian automobile manufacturer from 2007 to 2019, initially equipped with a 4.2-litre V8 engine developed in conjunction with Ferrari.
According to Fast Company, the new GranTurismo is expected to have a sleek design, similar to its predecessors, with its long hood and sloped roofline, and will also borrow features from Mesarati’s new MC20, with full-LED adaptive matrix headlights.
The automaker announced last year that it was planning to release 13 electrified vehicles between 2020 and 2024, including battery-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
The new Maserati models will be developed, engineered and built 100% in Italy, and will be fitted with electric propulsion systems to deliver innovation and good performance, notes the automaker.
About €800 million will be invested in construction of the new electric production line, which begun in 2020, with the first pre-production cars initially expected to come off the line before the end of 2021.
“The new Maserati GranTurismo and GranCabrio will be Maserati's first cars to adopt 100% electric solutions; they will be engineered in Modena and built at the Turin production hub. There will also be an electric version of the new Maserati MC20 supercar, to be produced at the Maserati plant in Modena,” says Maserati in a statement.
The trademark roar will continue to be an iconic feature for Maserati: “The upcoming models with full-electric power plant will have a unique, distinctive growl, just like the Maserati cars equipped with conventional engines,” it says.
