VMware targets SMEs

Apple's US market-share growth of anywhere between 150 basis points (according to IDC) and 230 basis points (Gartner) only hints at the Mac's impressive unit growth, reports MSN.

According to the company's most recent earnings release, unit sales of Macs grew by a whopping 23% year over year in a market that Gartner and IDC say grew by only about 3%.

The 4.1 million Macs that Apple sold in the quarter now give the company a worldwide share of about 4.5%. (And no, the data here does not include the 7.3 million iPads sold in the fourth quarter.)

IBM avails virtual desktop

IBM has unveiled the virtual desktop for smart business, a new workforce mobility offering that provides anytime, anywhere access to personal desktops from mobile devices - including tablets, netbooks, laptops and thin clients, writes Small Business Trends.

The IBM virtual desktop allows Windows or Linux desktops to be hosted and managed centrally, thus lowering the cost and complexity of managing PC environments through rapid deployment of new applications, automatic software updates and reducing the need for help desk requests.

The virtual desktop for smart business, which includes Verde software from Virtual Bridges, can be deployed on a customer's own infrastructure or through a Business Partner 'private cloud' hosted environment.

Logitech aims tablet add-ons

Logitech has said it is developing accessories and products aimed specifically at tablet PCs ahead of a shift in focus, says Laptop Shop.co.uk.

However, none of these products will be unveiled until 2012, as the Swiss technology firm plans to observe market trends in 2011.

The company ended 2010 on a high, receiving a net profit of $65 million in the final quarter of the year.
