Mac Mini server platform extended

Virtualisation specialist Parallels has released a version of its Server for Mac software designed for Apple's Mac Mini desktop system, reveals V3.co.uk.

The Parallels Server for Mac 4.0 Mini Edition software allows users to run the Mac Mini system as a MacOS X, Windows or Linux server system.

Designed as a value-priced version of the desktop Macintosh line, the Mac Mini sports a compact design and has been pitched by Apple as a low-cost, energy efficient desktop system.

According to Tuaw, the software comes with what Parallels calls “one-click” tools to optimise Windows and Linux virtual machines, and the server software can be updated automatically.

The software is available as an electronic download for $299, and a back-up install disc is available for an additional $14.95.

The Mac Mini version has been designed for small- to medium-sized enterprises that don't have much in-house server expertise, reveals IT World.

It has an express installation option, which means it can essentially configure itself. It also has wizards to assist in installing those additional OSes; the company says all you have to do is supply the product keys.
